Secular Dharma: a Practice of Care and Awakening for our Times (1 of 2)

Martine Batchelor
By: Martine Batchelor, Bernat Font

Throughout its long history, Buddhist teachings and practices have served a wide variety of people as a way to come to terms with the suffering of life and cultivate balance and compassion in an awakened way. In interacting with different times and cultures, the practice of the dharma has kept changing in response to circumstances—a great example of the Buddha’s teaching on conditionality. What are the conditions of this time or ‘saeculum’? How is the dharma relevant today for lay people who want to creatively engage with the present suffering and awaken? How can it be adapted to our circumstances while remaining connected to the profound teachings of the Buddha?
