Heather Gardner

Heather is the managing director at UC Santa Cruz’s Global and Community Health Program. A native of the Bay Area, her introduction to practice started with a Zen group in Atlanta that unfolded through Washington, DC- and Pittsburgh-based sanghas. In 2010, she began residential practice at San Francisco Zen Center’s City Center, including 9 months of monastic training at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center. In 2013, she took lay ordination vows with Zen teacher Paul Haller. After sitting her first Vipassana retreat at the Insight Retreat Center in 2018, she moved to the IRC as a Resident Volunteer where she remained until 2021. She is a graduate of the 2024-26 Dharma Leader Training program led by Gil Fronsdal and Ines Freedman, and has completed the Sati Program’s Introduction to Buddhist Chaplaincy program.
